An optic mount secures your optic to the rifle and determines your sight height, eye relief, and ultimately whether your expensive glass holds zero. The mount is as important as the optic itself.
Mount Types
One-Piece/Cantilever: Single piece mounting the optic forward for proper eye relief. Most common for magnified optics. Provides excellent rigidity.
Two-Piece Rings: Separate front and rear rings. Traditional scope mounting method. Allows more flexibility in positioning.
Co-witness Mounts: Specific heights for red dots to co-witness with iron sights. Absolute, lower-1/3, or 1.93" are common heights.
QD (Quick Detach): Lever systems allowing tool-free optic removal and return to zero. Critical for night vision users switching between optics.
Mount Heights
Height determines your cheek weld position:
Absolute co-witness: Red dot aligns with iron sights when both are deployed.
Lower 1/3 co-witness: Irons visible in lower third of optic window. Less cluttered sight picture.
1.70": Popular "heads up" height for faster, more natural neck position.
1.93": High mount for NODs clearance and upright shooting. Increasingly popular.
Higher specialty heights: 2.04", 2.26" for specific applications.
Quality Factors
Material: 7075-T6 aluminum is standard for quality mounts. Some use steel for ultimate strength (and weight).
Cross-bolts vs. Rings: How the mount clamps. Well-machined rings with proper torque maintain zero.
Rail Interface: Quality Picatinny clamping with full engagement across multiple slots.
Return to Zero (QD): Quality QD mounts return to within 1 MOA after removal/reinstallation. Cheap mounts drift.
