Muzzle Device Types
Flash Hiders: Reduce visible muzzle flash by dispersing hot gases. The A2 "birdcage" is the mil-spec standard and works well. Ideal for defensive rifles and low-light shooting. Minimal effect on recoil.
Compensators: Redirect gases upward to counteract muzzle rise. Excellent for fast follow-up shots. Popular for competition. Increase side blast and noise, can be uncomfortable for shooters to either side.
Muzzle Brakes: Redirect gases rearward at angles to reduce felt recoil. Most effective for recoil reduction. Significantly increase blast and noise for the shooter and bystanders.
Hybrid Devices: Combine features of two or more types. Many "flash hider comps" or "brake hiders" offer a balance of benefits.
Suppressor Mounts: QD mounts (like SilencerCo ASR, Dead Air KeyMo, or SureFire SOCOM) provide quick-attach interfaces for suppressors. Can also serve as standalone brakes or flash hiders.
Thread Pitch
Standard AR-15 barrel threading is 1/2x28 for 5.56/.223. Ensure any muzzle device matches your barrel threading. Other calibers use different thread pitches (e.g., 5/8x24 for .308).
Length Considerations
Muzzle devices count toward overall barrel length when permanently attached (pinned and welded). This is critical for 14.5" barrels that need to reach 16" OAL to avoid NFA restrictions. Ensure the device length gets you to 16"+ when pinned/welded.
Suppressor Compatibility
If planning to run a suppressor:
- Choose a mount compatible with your suppressor brand
- Consider a mount that functions as a flash hider or brake when the suppressor is removed
- Ensure proper alignment and shoulder

Material and Finish
