A weapon-mounted light (WML) is essential for a defensive rifle, enabling target identification and threat assessment in low-light conditions. You cannot shoot what you cannot identify, and most defensive situations occur in reduced light.
Light Output
Lumens: Total light output. More lumens = brighter, but not always better. 500-1000 lumens is adequate for most uses.
Candela: Beam intensity/throw. High candela = focused beam that reaches further. Important for outdoor use.
Both matter: A high-lumen, low-candela light floods an area but doesn't reach far. High candela with lower lumens creates a spotlight effect.
Beam Patterns
Flood: Wide beam illuminating a large area. Good for room clearing and close range.
Throw: Tight beam reaching long distance. Better for outdoors and longer range identification.
Balanced: Combination of both. Most weapon lights offer a balanced pattern with hot center and spill.
Switch Options
Tail Cap: Traditional location at rear of light body. Click for constant on, press for momentary.
Pressure Pad: Remote switch for activation without shifting grip. Essential for rifle WMLs.
Push Button: Some lights have body-mounted buttons. Less common for rifle use.
Dual Fuel/Multi-Function: Switches offering both momentary and constant-on, sometimes with program modes.
Mounting
Picatinny: Most common. Rock solid and universal.
M-LOK: Direct mount saves rail space. Adapters available for most lights.
Scout Pattern: Standardized mounting used by SureFire and compatible lights. Allows easy head and body swapping.
Power Source
CR123A: High energy density, long shelf life. The standard for quality WMLs.
18650 Rechargeable: More economical long-term. Ensure your light is rated for 18650 voltage.
AA/AAA: Some lights accept common batteries. Less power but more available.
