A weapon light mount secures your flashlight or weapon light to your rifle, shotgun, or pistol. The right mount positions the light correctly for optimal illumination coverage, shadow avoidance, and ergonomic activation.
Why Mount Matters
Even the best weapon light is only as useful as its positioning. A poorly positioned light can cast shadow from the muzzle device or barrel, blind the shooter with reflected light, or place the activation switch out of reach. The mount determines beam angle relative to the bore, height above the rail, and offset from center.
Mount Types
Direct/Inline Mounts: Position the light on the center of the bottom or side rail, directly in line with the barrel. Simple and secure. Some inline positions can cause barrel shadow at close range.
Offset Mounts: Mount the light to the side or below the handguard at an offset from center. Reduces barrel shadow and may improve hand clearance. Popular with lights mounted at 6 o'clock or 3/9 o'clock positions.
Scout/Lever Mounts: Designed for long body flashlights (SureFire Scout, Streamlight ProTac Rail Mount) used in the scout configuration (forward of the handguard). Provides a pressure-switch friendly position and keeps the light forward for better illumination without muzzle shadow.
Attachment Interface
Picatinny/MIL-STD-1913: The universal standard. Any M1913 rail accepts Picatinny mounts. Most reliable interface for secure attachment.
M-LOK: The modern standard for lightweight handguards. M-LOK light mounts are lower-profile than Picatinny mounts and integrate cleanly with M-LOK handguards.
KeyMod: Older alternative to M-LOK; less common in new handguards but still widely used. M-LOK has largely superseded KeyMod for new designs.
Offset Angle
Some mounts provide a 45-degree or other angular offset, positioning the light away from the 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position. This can improve switch access, reduce shadow from a suppressor or muzzle device, or simply provide more rail space for other accessories.
Compatibility Considerations
Verify that the mount's body diameter matches your light. Most quality mounts are sized for specific light body diameters (1", 1.25", etc.) or accept a universal clamp. Sloppy fit leads to light shift under recoil.
Selection Guidelines
For most builds, an M-LOK or Picatinny mount compatible with your specific light body diameter is the right choice. Arisaka Defense, SureFire, Unity Tactical, and Streamlight make well-regarded mounts. Match the mount's interface to your handguard's rail system and verify the body diameter matches your light.
