A foregrip attaches to your handguard and provides a forward grip surface for control. The style you choose affects weapon handling, shooting comfort, and legal compliance depending on your configuration.
Foregrip Styles
Vertical Foregrip (VFG): Perpendicular to the bore. Provides strong control and quick transitions. Can improve weapon manipulation (mag changes, charging handle). Note: VFGs on pistol-configured ARs create AOW/NFA concerns—check regulations.
Angled Foregrip (AFG): 30-45° angle. More natural wrist position for thumb-over-bore grip. Not subject to the same NFA restrictions as VFGs.
Hand Stop: Minimal protrusion that indexes the hand. Lightweight, maintains a natural grip. Good for competition where splits matter.
Stubby/Short VFG: Shortened vertical grip. Offers some VFG benefits with less snag potential. Can work with more aggressive stances.
Mounting Options
M-LOK: Most common. Direct mount to M-LOK slots.
KeyMod: Direct mount to KeyMod slots.
Picatinny: Mounts to rail sections. Most universal but adds weight.
Material Options
Polymer: Lightweight, inexpensive, adequate durability. Most common choice.
Aluminum: More durable, slightly heavier. Premium feel and longevity.
Rubber: Some grips feature rubber overmold for improved grip texture.
Functional Features
Storage compartments: Some VFGs include space for batteries or small tools. Adds length and complexity.
Bipod integration: Certain grips double as deployable bipods. Jack of all trades, master of none.
Barrier stops: Some designs include features for bracing against barricades.
Positioning
Foregrip placement affects control dynamics:
- Further forward: More leverage for recoil control, slower transitions
- More rearward: Faster transitions, arm closer to body (less fatigue)
Experiment with placement to find what works for your shooting style and arm length.
Selection Guidelines
- CQB/dynamic shooting: AFG or hand stop for natural grip
- Precision/supported shooting: VFG for consistent positioning
- Lightweight builds: Hand stop or stubby grip
- Pistol builds: AFG or hand stop (check VFG legality)
The best foregrip is the one that fits your natural grip and shooting style. Many experienced shooters prefer minimal attachments (hand stop) while others prefer the positive indexing of a VFG.
