Aftermarket dust covers with an integrated Picatinny rail are one of the most popular ways to mount optics on an AK without modifying the receiver. Quality options from manufacturers like RS Regulate, Midwest Industries, and TWS fit far more tightly than mil-spec covers and return to a consistent zero when reinstalled.
Fit Matters: AK receiver tolerances vary significantly between manufacturers. Always verify the dust cover is compatible with your specific AK variant (Yugo-pattern, milled, Romanian, etc.) before purchasing.
Return to Zero: This is the key spec for optic-mounting dust covers. A quality rail cover should hold zero through multiple removal and reinstall cycles. Look for reviews confirming repeatable zero before committing to a rail cover for precision use.
Optic-Cut and Specialty Covers
Some dust covers integrate specific optic footprints, built-in red dot mounts, or other features. These are typically model-specific and less versatile than a Picatinny rail cover.
