The charging handle is used to manually cycle the action—chambering the first round, clearing malfunctions, and performing press checks. While the standard mil-spec handle works, upgraded charging handles with ambidextrous controls and extended latches make operation easier and faster.
Latch Styles
Standard/Mil-Spec: Small latch on the left side only. Requires breaking grip to operate. Inexpensive and functional but not optimal.
Extended Latch: Larger latch for easier grip, still left-side only. An improvement over mil-spec at modest cost.
Ambidextrous: Latches on both sides allow operation with either hand. Essential for left-handed shooters and preferred by many right-handers for flexibility. Releases can be paddles, levers, or hooks.
Materials
7075-T6 Aluminum: Standard material, strong and lightweight. Most quality charging handles use this.
Steel: Some components may be steel for durability, particularly the latches on ambidextrous models.
Polymer: Some handles use polymer latches or bodies. Can be durable but generally considered less robust than aluminum.
Gas Management
Running a suppressor directs more gas rearward through the charging handle into the shooter's face. Gas-busting or suppressor-rated charging handles include features like:
- Channels that redirect gas away from the shooter
- Tighter sealing between handle and upper receiver
- O-rings or gaskets to reduce gas leakage

Consideration for Optics
Large optics or magnifiers can make charging handle operation difficult. Look for handles with sufficient latch reach and consider how your grip will work with your specific optic setup. Some competition handles have very large latches that can interfere with low-mounted optics.
Selection Guidelines
If you're right-handed and not running a suppressor, an extended latch handle offers good value. For left-handed shooters or those wanting maximum flexibility, ambidextrous handles are worth the investment. If running suppressed, a gas-managing design significantly improves the shooting experience. Quality options from Radian, Geissele, and BCM are reliable choices.
